Weird bar laws from around the world.
Here are some weird (and real) bar laws from around the world 🍻
A few are historical or still enforced in limited placesโ€”lawmakers get creative around alcohol.

    🇬🇧 United Kingdom

You canโ€™t be drunk in a pubโ€ฆ legally
Itโ€™s technically illegal to be drunk inside a licensed pub, even though thatโ€™s kind of the point.

    Horses get special treatment
In some places, bartenders are legally required to give water to horses tied outside a pub.

    🇫🇷 France

    You must offer free water
Bars are legally required to provide free potable water if youโ€™re buying alcohol.

    🇩🇪 Germany

Beer can be cheaper than water
Not illegalโ€”and very common. Some German laws classify beer as a โ€œfood.โ€

    🇮🇹 Italy

    Drunk in public = fine
Being visibly drunk in public places can result in fines, even if you just left a bar.

    🇯🇵 Japan

    Public drinking is legal
You can legally drink alcohol on the street, in parks, or on public transport (with some local exceptions).

    🇨🇦 Canada (some provinces)

    You canโ€™t move your drink
Once served, alcohol often must stay at the table or area where it was orderedโ€”no wandering with your beer.

    🇦🇺 Australia (varies by state)

    โ€œLockout lawsโ€
Some cities prohibit people from entering bars after a certain hour, even though the bar stays open.

    🇺🇸 United States (state-by-state weirdness)

No drinking while standing (some places)
Certain jurisdictions require you to be seated to drink alcohol.

No alcohol sales on Election Day (historically)
Originally meant to prevent vote-buying via free drinks.

    No happy hour (some states)
Discounted drinks are banned in places like parts of Massachusetts.

    🇸🇪 Sweden

    Strong alcohol = government control
Drinks above a certain percentage can only be purchased at state-run liquor stores, not bars.

    🇮🇳 India (varies by state)

    Dry days
Alcohol sales are banned on election days, religious holidays, or suddenlyโ€”with little warning.
